Photos of the spell-binding artwork at Gibbs Farm have been circling the internet for some time now, and I have come to the conclusion that I would be doing you all a disservice if I did not share some of them on here! I mean, how incredible is this giant sculpture? It was created by artist Neil Dawson for Gibbs Farm, a large sculpture park in North Auckland, New Zealand, and it is one of the coolest installations I have ever seen. I love everything about it; its larger than life size, the magical way it appears as if drawn on the air with a giant sharpie marker, but most of all I enjoy its placement within the farm. Up on a hill, the frame-like nature of the floating “paper” structure provides a window to the varying skyline, which changes with the seasons as well as the time of day. This breathtaking piece of art adds an unexpected, whimsical element to an otherwise beautiful, but slightly less imaginative setting.
Seeing this art-splattered farm is most definitely on my bucket list. What do you think of Dawson’s work?
That is the coolest piece of art I think I’ve ever seen!
I’m enjoying how it’s confusing me, lol! Your description of its design and the “giant Sharpie” look/feel is spot on.
You know what I would love is to see a video of this piece. It just looks so impossible in a still photo that my mind dismisses it as a trick. I’d love to see it as the viewer is in motion. Thanks for the images either way!
Whoa… is that really a sculpture..? It really looks like a drawing…
This is really a great piece of Art!
Love this! Thanks for sharing.
It’s such a simple concept and yet the effect is inspiring!
I think it’s brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
Great artwork. I would love to see it.
I like this piece it is unobtrusive and makes your eyes question what they are seeing, I wonder if it’s the same when you are near it.
this is beautiful! Each photo telling its own story. I love art and appreciate other’s who share it. Thank you for this :)
This made me smile; it is simple yet incredible!
Great artwork! If you didn’t say so, I’d have thought somebody doodled on the photograph!
Love how it looks completely different from all of the angles! Bet it would look great in a stormy sky too!
I enjoy the way these sculptures play with our cultural ideas around perception and context.
How wild. Why do i feel like I just dropped my napkin? Fun post.
This is so neat! It’s beautiful! i love the simplicity.
its a hop step and jump from Tasmania to go see this. thank you for sharing, and since you ask, I find Dawson’s work spellbinding, congratulations on your FP !!
Reblogged this on Snipets from a Non-runner… and commented:
Tutus and Stilettos is right… this is awesome!
It’s so intriguing that I went to the Gibbs Farm website, and I see the date is ’94! I didn’t know about it but thanks to you, now I do. Very cool – but then a lot is cool down there in New Z, no?
cool !! liked.
It just looks like a cartoon drawing on a photo to me. What a load of rubbish. I can’t believe people are saying ‘beautiful’ and ‘amazing’. What a joke!! And what an ugly blot on a BEAUTIFUL landscape that is.
I thought that was digital, then I started reading… That is definitely bucket list worthy!
I totally agree that it looks like a sharpie. I almost can’t believe it’s real because it looks like a cartoon drawing on a photograph. I love it though. I think it would be amazing to see in person. Wow.
We are a neighbour of the Gibbs farm and it’s worth a visit. The Dawson sculpture is our favourite and believe me, it’s even more impressive when you are standing under it.
Cant’ quite believe it is real!…..

Nice, when I first looked at the artwork, I seemed like a photo-manipulation. I’m pretty surprised that the image is a photo of a sculpture.
